EDAS Desktop Interface Redesign
EDAS (Editor’s Assistant) is a publishing platform for academic papers, great platform. However, the UI design of this website is not appealing to the audience. The layout of some pages is also not user-friendly. As an academic assignment, I redesigned this website and make it more modern and pleasing to the eye. More importantly, make the layout more reasonable and usable.
Original Desgin
Sketches
I had never heard of EDAS before this assignment, so it’s challenging to design for something I’m not familiar with. I first clicked through the EDAS’s web pages. Then, I did some research on some library websites to see what features would be great to add to this project. I drew the sketches for the Login, Profile, Conferences & Journals, List of Papers, Paper Details, and Upload paper page.
Wireframes
I was excited to start working on the wireframes and surface comps after drawing sketches for the new design of this website. I used cards as containers a lot to make these pages more organized and less cluttered.
Surface Comps
I decided to use similar color shades from the originals for the new designs but give them a totally different look. I referenced Material Design while polishing these pages and try to keep everything clean. I believe this new design and structure would help users find what they need easily.
Conclusion
The most challenging part of the project is to figure out how the original website works. The website itself is confusing enough for me to find the things that I was looking for. Moreover, I’m not a user of EDAS, I do not have access to certain pages. It took me a while to get an idea of what each page does.
I think this redesign is a success and I’m happy with it. It’s able to demonstrate the main functionalities without having a cluttered look. This new design is a lot cleaner and more modern than the original layout, I believe it would also provide higher usability to the website so the users would not get confused about where to find what they are looking for.
